Things I’ve Bought That I Love: The Winter Short

A minor sad irony in my life is that I love clothing, but I can’t put together an outfit for shit. It’s awful. Trying to layer is my idea of a nightmare. You know those restaurants where you walk in and they give you a notecard and a pencil with a million ingredients, and make your responsible for coming up with your burger or stir fry or noodle soup? I hate that so much, and that’s layering to me. I’m bad with components! Just give me the final product!

I have accumulated cool clothes over the years, but always panic when I look at them and end up wearing some version of this:

Thats why I love jumpsuits- I am left to do nothing except put on some underwear, a bra, a pair of earrings and I’m ready to roll. It’s too bad jumpsuits are made primarily for 1970′s disco enthusiasts and Ghostbusters.

So yeah, I need help. I’m a sucker for websites that have lookbooks and you can buy a whole outfit. Usually the whole outfit is too expensive, so I use the lookbooks to approximate my own look with the clothes in my closet. But for the first time ever, I went to a site and bought an entire outfit they suggested.

My friend Zooey is the master and commander of the winter short. This girl can layer. You know that girl who wears patterned tights, cool high waisted shorts, a blouse tucked in, minimal jewelry and flats that are actually flattering on the leg? That’s Zooey. Check her out in 500 Days Of Summer. Mega hot.

I love wearing shorts. To me, they are the ultimate way to look carefee, unpretentious, and youthful. Unfortunately, I cannot get away with wearing shorts that have an inseam shorter than 4 inches. I have some upper thigh chub rub going on that no one wants to see except some very specific fetishists. Shorts these days are very deceptive. They always seemed like there was a lot of material there, because shorts lately are styled so high-waisted they come up to bra level. But they’re still crazy short.

That’s why these Anthropologie shorts are great. They’re sexy but a modest length. I also love this lace-y blouse. Good for under blazers or over a pair of skinny jeans and boots.

Good for: girls and women who want to partake in the shorts trend but also want not to have annoying wedgies all day.

  1. Anthropologie is my crack. My addiction has become a well dressed perfectly accessorized monkey clinging to my back who forces me to buy silk caftans and patterned tights.

  2. Shorts always make me feel like I am both appropriately dressed and casual. Too cool for anything. Like I’m a rich lady running errands after pilates. Shorts and a loose top is the ultimate comfyness (though today has been deemed a yoga pants day, and that might just beat it).

The internet is glad you have you back! xx

  3. I remember a Mindy Kaling DOT Com at one point. All it had was like a webcam photo, or something, but it was fabulous. I am so happy that you’re going to have a place outside of Twitter to be brilliant. I loved your old blog, and I love this one.

My little sister picks out all my outfits because she is of the Look Book generation. I am of the ketchup-stained tearaway Adidas pants and vertically striped shirts generation.

Looking forward to checking this site religiously. Hopefully, you will update religiously.

  4. Okay, that came out like I’m addicted to substances. Image it’s double-spaced. Also, imagine I’m less of a fangirl.

  6. I love the top, but I am too short-waisted to wear things tucked in without looking like that awkward chubby nerd from your 6th grade advanced math class. I might as well be wearing a t-shrt with 3 wolves on it.
Those shorts are gorgeous, but what else would you wear them with? I am similarly unable to put together outfits, hence the reason I wear dresses 99% of the time. Also, in a dress, no one can see my fat thighs! Win-win!

  7. Finally a Mindy Kaling website! Something to tide me over until I get the book.

Love your taste, the outfit is gorgeous.

  8. Hey Mindy,
I love the fetish chub rub line. Thank you for that gift. Now, I spend a lot of time outdoors so I can layer like a champ. In fact that’s all I ever do when it comes to fashion. If you want to look, say… “Mountain woman” than this may help: http://www.trailsedge.com/blog/how-to-look-outdoorsy-without-saying-a-word/#more-9523

However, I’ll warn you I live in Seattle where this look is totally acceptable and no one is pretty.
    Sincerely,
    Melina

  10. I want that shirt. Oh dear, I SO want that shirt. Even though it’s already so freakin’ cold here I’d ruin the look by covering it up with a huge puffy coat, and even though it’s $168. It’d be the most money I’ve ever spent on a freakin’ *shirt* and it would be fabulous.

  11. Anthropologie speaks my LANGUAGE. Love the shorts- the only way I can wear them is with tights. So glad that is kind of in right now. Also, their dresses can do no wrong.

  12. Jumpsuits are back. I wore a fantastic Graham & Spencer jumpsuit just last weekend, and the dude sweeping in front of the restaurant was all “I love your outfit!” which is pretty much scientific evidence that it worked. YOU’RE WELCOME.

  13. So many shorts I have been picking up lately that are “modest” (aka not Jessica Simpson in Daisy Dukes ) DO go boob-high! Like a human Humpty Dumpty. Hate it. I will have to look into these shorts!

  14. Wait-THERE ARE FLATS OUT THERE THAT WON’T MAKE ME FEEL LIKE A 65-YEAR-OLD SCHOOL LIBRARIAN?

My world has been turned upside-down.

  15. So this is really cute but would not work on someone that is over 130 pounds. Thats why Zooey looks adorable and the Anthro model looks adorable.

Thicker girls go with the midi skirt trend, http://www.instyle.com/instyle/package/general/photos/0,,20518278_20520723_21017438,00.html

much more flattering. Shorts just don’t work on girls with thick legs and a big butt. It just doesn’t. Stay away.
